Research Scholar – sustainability transitions, development, and wellbeing

iiasa social cohesion, health and wellbeing (SHAW) research group

The IIASA Population and Just Societies (POPJUS) Program is looking to recruit a researcher for the Social Cohesion, Health and Wellbeing (SHAW) Research Group to work on the "Sustainability Performance, Evidence, and Scenarios" (SPES) Project. The successful candidate will have a strong quantitative background enabling them to study factors supporting transformation processes, and explore potential implications for wellbeing.

background

The IIASA POPJUS Program strives to produce empirical-based research focusing on human and social dimensions of global change processes. With human population and behavior being one of the key drivers of transformational change toward sustainable and resilient societies, the program applies and develops innovative approaches and perspectives to study population phenomena that include population aging, health and human wellbeing, human capital formation, and migration drivers and patterns. Insights into current and future population sizes, structures, and distributions are fundamental to understanding human impacts on ecosystems and simultaneously, the impact of environmental changes on human wellbeing differentiated by sub-populations. Within the POPJUS Program, The SHAW Research Group comprehensively addresses health and human wellbeing in its multiple dimensions. SHAW provides empirically based evidence and measures that can be used to assess human development progresses. The group explores the role of transformations and global change processes, including demographic transitions and climate change, and their implications for social cohesion, health, and wellbeing worldwide.

the project

The overall objective of the SPES project is to develop a novel integrated framework on sustainability transitions based on theoretical, empirical and policy insights to reconcile productivity enhancement and value-generation with inclusiveness and environmental protection. Using interdisciplinary methods, SPES aims to generate new knowledge and evidence about the nexus between economic growth, human flourishing, and sustainability, considering four central pillars of sustainable human development: productivity, equality, sustainability, and participation. The approach of SPES is grounded in the increasing consensus that economic growth, despite being an important driver to improve wellbeing, is not automatically equivalent to sustainable human development, but has to be understood within social and environmental boundaries.

the POSITION

The successful candidate will join the Sustainability Performance, Evidence, and Scenarios (SPES) Project (project duration January 2023 – Dec 2025) and support the project team with the empirical analysis of drivers of sustainability transitions and resulting implications for wellbeing using international micro and macro level data and innovative statistical and econometric methods. Furthermore they will support the development of scenarios that are suitable to assess future sustainability transitions and to understand enabling and disabling factors and policy implications.

main tasks and responsibilities

  • Contribute actively to the research of the SPES Project, especially on topics related to the analysis of drivers of sustainability transitions and the implications for wellbeing.
  • Support the collection of relevant international data at the micro and macro level. Prepare and managing data sources for the project.
  • Conduct statistical analyses on sustainability transitions and wellbeing implications.
  • Develop scenarios in close collaboration with different project stakeholders.
  • Carry out research that advances the state-of-the-art on the topic, present the results at relevant conferences and workshops, and publish it in peer reviewed journals.
  • Actively engage with other researchers in the POPJUS Program and across IIASA programs in establishing joint research projects.
  • In line with the team spirit that prevails at IIASA, the incumbent may occasionally work on other tasks assigned by their superiors, that might not be directly related to this appointment but where the post holder has relevant experience and skills, and/or a shortage of immediate personnel capabilities requires such.
